2/22/2021  ·  by CRE Finance Council  ·  CREFC Webinars  ·  Research and Background Documents

Featuring Andre Perry, Senior Fellow in the Metropolitan Policy Program at Brookings, this webinar will cover the importance of Black History Month and will give attendees a historical perspective on housing and the development of Black neighborhoods in the U.S. The impacts of racist housing policies and practices born during segregation are manifested in today’s property values. Redlining, racially restrictive housing covenants, single-family zoning ordinances and other processes set conditions that devalue single family residences in Black-majority neighborhoods across the country to a sum of $156 billion according to Brookings Institution research. Andre, who helped calculate that significant loss in equity, and will offer a framework on how to restore the value extracted from Black communities by racism and white supremacy. This event is in celebration of Black History Month, but CREFC's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee is committed to promoting diversity and amplifying marginalized voices within CRE finance all year long. The Committee looks forward to providing ongoing opportunities to learn in the coming months.
