European Energy-Efficiency Initiatives for Commercial Real Estate: An Introduction

5/18/2022  ·  by KBRA  ·  Environmental, Social, Governance  ·  Research and Background Documents

KBRA UK (KBRA) describes Energy Performance Certificates and provides insight on the regulatory landscape in the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK). The EU and UK have published a series of legislation and proposals in their commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Carbon neutrality is when an economy—companies, nations, and individuals— achieves net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by removing an equivalent amount of emissions that was released into the atmosphere. As buildings are among the largest sources of energy consumption, improving energy efficiency across the built environment is expected to help deliver national climate change initiatives and decarbonisation objectives. To that end, the European Commission (EC) and the UK government expect countries to prioritise building energy improvements, with interim results anticipated by 2030.
